The Project Manager will be responsible for the execution of new product development and line maintenance R&D projects. The work will performed at our Redwood Shores, CA facility, in conjunction with our worldwide manufacturing teams. The project team will consist of hardware, software and chemistry team members.  

The project manager (PM) in this role will be based in Redwood Shores and will report to the Senior Manager of Portfolio and Project Management.

The Project Manager will be responsible for all activities within his or her project teams. These include:

  • Applying project management methodology in efforts to: develop new technical capabilities, knowledge and design concepts (R&D), commercialize new scientific and technical capabilities (Commercialization), and to manage the evaluation/resolution of field issues (Sustaining). 
  • Responsibility for delivering assigned projects on-time, on-budget, and with the required scope, and suggesting trade-offs between the three as needed per project priorities.
  • Developing cross-functional plans together with the project team including realistic but aggressive timelines, budget and resources planning, risk assessment and contingency planning.
  • Preparing and executing countermeasures against schedule, cost or scope slips. Driving the team to “out-of-box” thinking and creative issue resolution.
  • Maintaining control over the project by measuring performance and taking corrective or preventive action where appropriate.  
  • Acting as spokesperson for the project, which may include representing the program internally and externally.  Understanding the communication needs and styles of stakeholders, and responding accordingly. 
  • Preparing and presenting at project gate and update meetings in accordance with project practices.
  • Managing the storage and retention of all project related documentation to ensure ISO conformance.
  • Coordinating resources with functional managers and Portfolio Manager to ensure that no needed roles go unfilled.
  • Developing a risk management plan and executing risk management processes, developing risk responses to eliminate or reduce the probability and impact of project risks.  Ensures that contingency and fallback plans are in place if risk events are realized.
  • Ensuring that the project meets expectations for manufacturing transfer in terms of design release, procedure readiness, bills of material readiness, etc.  Works with the receiving manufacturing sites to ensure that specific requirements are met. 
  • Completes project closure activities including: gathering lessons learned, updating records, hand-off of project deliverables, releasing the team, and transitioning mutually-agreed-upon issues to downstream acceptors

Job Requirements


  • Graduate engineer or scientist in appropriate discipline (ME, EE, Systems, Chemistry)
  • 5+ years of experience in product development, 3+ years as a PM 
  • Experience in development of complex products as team member or PM
  • Experience in managing teams working on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, formal presentation) at all levels of the organization
Preferred Qualifications
  • Management of teams performing both hardware and software development
  • Experience with Agile methodology a plus
