Position Summary and Overview:
As the key member of the Systems Engineering Department, the Technical Lead Systems Design Engineer is responsible for the creation of new electro-opto-mechanical design concepts/architecture for Aperio scanner products.
Scanners are complex medical devices consisting of high precision stages, multiple line scan and area cameras, programmable light sources in different modes and automated high throughput autoloader. Scanner images are high resolution gigapixel images compressed using various compression libraries.
Working closely with the Product Managers and the rest of hardware and software design engineers, he/she will review other design considerations such as reliability, manufacturability, serviceability and cost for optical, electronic, electrical and mechanical aspects of a product.
Furthermore, the Lead Systems Engineer will lead design activities through various phases of a project interfacing with multiple cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Create new and innovative optical-electro-mechanical design concepts/architecture 
  • Lead and manage Systems Modeling of a design (cost, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability)
  • Lead and manage overall System characterization and performance modeling
  • Develop system requirements and specifications and system level design description documents,
  • Interact with suppliers and specialty vendors and other OEM manufacturers to ensure that their products meet our system requirements
  • Lead design activities for product and sub-assemblies throughout various phases
  • Support Manufacturing and Field Services with innovative design solutions to ease the manufacturing and service of the products
  • Risk/Failure Analysis: dFMEA, pFMEA, uFMEA, DFR & DFM
  • Develop V&V protocols and test cases
  • Present and defend designs in design review meetings
  • Transfer design knowledge to the Manufacturing and Service Groups

Job Requirements


  • A minimum of ten (10) years Design and Systems Engineering experience in robotics/automation or other related fields is required.
  • A minimum of a BA/BS Degree in Mechanical/Computer/Electrical/Optical Engineering or other related majors is required.
  • Confirmed ability to lead multi-functional teams and run complex engineering projects
  • Demonstrated ability to design and develop a significantly sized electro-mechanical product
  • Validated ability to generated V&V protocols and design risk assessment analysis for a significantly sized systems project (Hardware + Software)
  • Tried knowledge in digital imagery, optics, microscopy, or related field
  • Experience in system integration of automated electro-mechanical instruments
  • Ability to work closely with small or big teams as the engineering leader
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in system integration of optical instruments
  • Engineering development work experience in regulated medical device companies
  • Experience with FDA and ISO risk management and design control regulations for medical devices
  • Experience with FDA 510k submissions and PMA (premarket approval)
  • Working knowledge of Mechatronics and measurement systems and SW/HW tools
  • Capability using SolidWorks
  • Knowledge and utilization of hardware/software interfacing, motion control and device control programming (C++ or other languages)
  • Familiarity with high precision stages, servo motors, digital cameras and frame grabbers
  • Optical alignment concepts
This position is located in Vista, California and may require up to 10% travel
