As part of the Systems group within the Research and Development organization, the Staff Systems Engineer will have an exciting opportunity to utilize their systems knowledge to contribute to the design and development solutions for the Microbiology business.  This role requires thorough understanding of system design and system integration tools and methodologies to bring together the different functional elements of system design i.e. Hardware, Software, and Assays. This position will help lead the development and review of requirements, perform systems validation, and provide technical direction and guidance for projects from conception to completion.  The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and have a strong multi-discipline technical background with direct experience in the development of diagnostic devices used in laboratories.
  • Leads integration of analytical and performance related elements of software, hardware, and consumable assays.  
  • Converts customer and business needs into system design and requirements. 
  • Manages interfaces between product subsystems. 
  • Defines critical interfaces between subsystems.  
  • Provides an expert understanding of applications, customer needs to be addressed, behaviors and architected solutions to streamline design improvements and/or modifications to commercialized products and new product development. 
  • Provides human factors and usability technical expertise to optimize interactions of device user with device user environments and interfaces. 
  • Generates reliability analysis, design for manufacturability and design for cost.  
  • Troubleshoots and provides technical assessment of system level performance issues.  

Job Requirements


Educational Requirements: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in field with 9+ years of experience OR Master’s degree in field with 7+ years of experience OR Doctoral degree in field with 4+ years of experience.

The candidate needs to have a strong background in systems engineering. Success in this position will require:
  • Demonstrated experience working with the entire spectrum of product lifecycle management
  • Demonstrated experience leading/performing product definition, system architecture, requirements writing, requirements management, requirements analysis, risk analysis, hazard analysis, product test and evaluation, system verification and validation including all associated design control documentation. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with complex systems 
  • Experience working within an ISO 13485 and FDA regulated environment
  • Expertise in application of Lean, 6-sigma, Kaizen and 5S principles to problem solving and continuous improvement
  • Strong analytical skills, use of data to drive decisions, including Design of Experiments
  • Strong ability to write, present and communication verbally in a clear manner and be able to work in a multidisciplinary team environment 
  • Effectively collaborates cross-functionally with i.e. program managers, product managers, business leaders, engineers, development scientists, clinical affairs, regulatory affairs, and quality engineering

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Experience working within a microbiology related field
  • Experience working with HP ALM
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools
