JOB SUMMARY:


This is a multifaceted technical role at the intersection of engineering and business. Versatility and critical thinking are essential to this role in which you will perform studies to characterize functionally critical attributes for instruments (primarily) and plastic consumables, put in place appropriate process controls, and/or assess feasibility of second source components. These components may include electronic/mechanical components such as LEDs or PCBAs, or filters or plastics used in the assay cartridge. Additionally, this role affords the opportunity to achieve and be credited for quantifiable financial results through engineering projects targeted at the cost savings through process improvements or validation of second-source suppliers.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


• Evaluate components in the context of their functional applications in Cepheid systems.
  --  Identify the critical to function elements of a component
  --  Reverse engineer a component to understand what manufacturing processes impact functional performance
• Determine and establish the right level of controls at the supplier and/or within Cepheid to ensure sustainable, predictable supply and quality.
• Participate in technical audits at supplier sites, including assessments of their core technical competencies and process controls.
• Establish, track, and trend key component and supplier performance metrics.
• Develop and execute control plans with engineering and manufacturing teams.
• Use data analytics to make recommendations on actions.
• Identify, quantify, prioritize, and drive supplier improvement projects.
• Design and direct feasibility studies for alternate components.
• Drive Cepheid requirements with suppliers, while representing supplier capabilities within Cepheid
• This position will require travel. Candidates must be willing and able to travel.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (MINIMAL COMPETENCIES)


Bachelor’s degree in field with 5+ years of related work experience OR  Master’s degree in field with 3+ years of related work experience OR Doctoral degree in field with 0-2 years of related work experience


• Degree in Engineering Discipline (e.g. mechanical, electrical, biomedical) with the corresponding level of experience: B.S. with ≥5 years, M.S. or Ph.D. with ≥3 years
• Ability to think critically and act independently in finding and executing solutions to complex problems
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working with cross-functional teams
• High level of organization and attentiveness to detail
• High degree of professional acumen; can work well with other internal functional groups and external suppliers
• Demonstrated experience with high volume electrical/mechanical manufacturing processes - automated processes, manual assembly, and functional tests.
• Practical understanding of statistical techniques for data analysis and process control
• Demonstrated technical and analytical ability
• Experience working directly with suppliers and contract manufacturers
• Understanding of manufacturing processes and controls related to area of expertise

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


• Experience working in an FDA-regulated environment
• Graduate level degree in one of the aforementioned engineering disciplines
• Basic understanding of PCR
• Programming skills; familiarity with programming languages such as Python
• Experience leading cross-functional teams
• Demonstrated experience working with suppliers and contract manufacturers on a regular basis
