Sr. R&D Engineer

Position Summary

The Sr. R&D Engineer position is an exciting opportunity to join R&D team in a high growth business unit at Pall LifeScience’s Centre of Excellence in New England (Westborough, MA). This position will collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members to design and develop novel bioprocessing products and equipment for downstream processing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to add significant value in defining the future of drug manufacturing processes.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Supports R&D’s goals by participating on the new hollow fiber product development team as a lead technical contributor (Designs), with responsibility from concept generation to full implementation.
  • Performs research (biology, chemistry, mechanical, software, etc.) to generate analytical data for internal and/or external clients. Responsible for the investigation of new technologies and experimentation directed at the practical application of scientific theories. Assures that programs meet scientific objectives and are aligned with customer needs. Builds relationships with industry/technology key opinion leaders.
  • Assumes engineering design authority for internal or external (outsourced) development activities by collaborating with Pall associates or third party vendors that may be located on different continents. Ensures that product materials, manufacturing, and performance meet all specified requirements including regulatory (UL, ROHS, CE, USP VI, etc.).
  • Provides conceptual and detailed designs for devices, including molded plastic filter shells using 3D CAD software (Solidworks). Uses tolerance analysis and stress calculations for design analysis.
  • Evaluates technical risks by leading DFMEA’s and ensuring timely completion of required actions.
  • Creates prototypes and develops written test protocols to verify or evaluate design performance. Arranges verification testing and creates reports and presentations related to design activities.
  • Complies with document control processes (ECO, ECN, and BOM).
  • Helps develop realistic project plans, stage gate deliverables, conducts design reviews, and anticipates project road blocks, delays and risks. Utilizes appropriate escalation and communication techniques to resolve issues.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Provides regular technical updates and project summaries to R&D management and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment by complying with all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Completes all mandatory training assignments (Ethics, Intellectual Property, etc.)
  • Travel to worldwide locations as projects require, but typically averaging 15% or less.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience in the design and development of manufacturing equipment and manufacturing production processes.
  • Experience and knowledge of historical, current, and innovative manufacturing technologies.
  • Knowledge of and development experience with membranes (general), specifically hollow fibers and TFF membranes.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling. Experience with design of complex assemblies (plastic, metal, and electromechanical systems).
  • Experience working with external vendors (subcontractors) such as mold tool manufacturers, mechanical fabricators, material suppliers.
  • Experience with injection molding of plastic components/assemblies.
  • Knowledge of common and specialty engineering materials, including polysulfone, polypropylene, and stainless steel is essential.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project).
  • Strong team player, self-motivated and perseverance, data and process driven.
  • Displays solid written and verbal communication and presentation skills, and communicates effectively with team members and next level leaders.
  • Skills in leadership, conflict resolution, and consensus building.

Job Requirements


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Chemical/Mechanical/Biomedical/Materials/Polymer engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years’ of experience as lead mechanical design engineer in new product development environment.
  • 5+ years' knowledge and development experience of membranes (general), TFF membranes, and/or hollow fibers. 
  • 5+ years' experience with design and manufacture of complex assemblies including plastics and epoxy resins. 
  • 5+ years' knowledge of fluid-contacting material requirements and materials for pharmaceutical manufacture.
  • 5+ years' experience with material validation for consumables used in pharmaceutical manufacture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with hollow fiber product design and usage.
  • Advanced degree in Chemical/Mechanical/Biomedical/Materials/Polymer engineering or related field.
  • Greater than five years’ experience as lead mechanical design engineer in new product development environment.
  • Experience with design and development of bioprocessing or food processing equipment’s.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the current industry guidelines for designing, manufacturing, testing and documenting biopharmaceutical process equipment. (ASME BPE, GAMP, cGMP, ISPE, etc.)
  • Experience in qualification activities (FAT/SAT) for process equipment in the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven collaboration skills in a fast-paced goal-driven matrix organization.
