Sr. Principal Engineer

Position Summary

The Sr. Principal R&D Engineer position is an exciting opportunity to join R&D team in a high growth business unit at Pall LifeScience’s Centre of Excellence in New England (Westborough, MA). This position will collaborate with multi-disciplinary team members to design and develop novel bioprocessing products and equipment for downstream processing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to add significant value in defining the future of drug manufacturing processes.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Supports R&D’s goals by providing technical guidance and expertise to multiple new product development teams, as both a consultant or a lead technical contributor, with responsibility from concept generation to fully commercialized products.  
  • Provides technical direction for internal and external development activities in the areas of design and sensing.  Collaborates with Pall associates or third party vendors that may be located on different continents. Ensures that all appropriate requirements are identified, understood and documented for product materials, performance, and manufacture.
  • Becomes the team’s recognized technical expert in the areas of: design, sensing, technical problem solving, and continuous chromatography.
  • Identifies and mitigates technical risks by contributing to DFMEA’s with a focus on mechanical engineering and sensors.
  • Contributes to realistic project plans, stage gate deliverables, and design reviews.  Anticipates project road blocks, delays and risks; resolves without escalation.  
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.  
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of and development experience with single use bioprocessing hardware, consumables, and sensing technologies. 
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling analyses, and simulations. Experience with design of complex assemblies (plastic, metal, and electromechanical systems). 
  • Experience with design of injection molded plastic components and subsequent assembly.
  • Deep technical understanding of thermoplastic welding, sensors, sensing, sterilization, connectivity, filters, filtration, aseptic processing.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project).
  • Strong team player, self-motivated and perseverance, data-driven.  Mentors less experienced engineers to become same.
  • Displays outstanding written and verbal communication and presentation skills; communicates effectively with team members, other leaders, and customers.
  • Highly skilled in leadership, conflict resolution, and consensus building.

Job Requirements


Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in Mechanical / Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience as lead mechanical design engineer in new product development environment.
Additional Requirements
  • Completes all mandatory training assignments (Ethics, Intellectual Property, etc.)
  • Travel to worldwide locations as projects require, but typically averaging 15% or less.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment by complying with all company safety policies and procedures. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Greater than 15 years of experience as lead mechanical design engineer or design owner in new product development environment.
  • Experience with design and development of bioprocessing or food processing equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the current industry guidelines for designing, manufacturing, testing and documenting biopharmaceutical process equipment. (ASME BPE, GAMP, cGMP, ISPE, etc.)
  • Experience in qualification activities (FAT/SAT) for process equipment in the biopharmaceutical industry.
  • Proven collaboration skills in a fast-paced goal-driven matrix organization.
