Job Description

Business Context: The person in this role reports directly to the Sr. Manufacturing Engineering Manager and is the mold manufacturing, maintenance and repair Subject Matter Expert [SME]. This person works with the Tooling Manager various Tooling groups as a hands-on leader, trainer and mentor to ensure industry standard equipment, methods and processes are utilized.

Introduction to the role: 

The Sr. Tooling Engineer is Cepheid’s highest level mold-maker individual contributor. This person is required to have extensive hands-on experience, understanding and working knowledge of plastic injection molds, their manufacturing, maintenance, repair and modifications. S/he will provide problem solving leadership as well as direction and final determination of actions required to correct molds and get them back into production. Safety and quality are top priorities so this person must be aware of best practices and capable of both performing and training others to perform related machine and manual operations accordingly.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
 

  • This individual will act as an advisor to resolve technical tooling problems regarding production molds
  • Evaluates processes, procedures, and work instructions directly related to supporting the efficient operation of the tools / molds; materials used (tool steel), proper use of machinery, proper hand tools, proper inspection equipment, and methods of calculation for collecting data
  • Provide technical leadership and in-depth expertise for injection mold design, manufacturing, modification and maintenance
  • Oversees activities of tooling repair project(s) with responsibility for results; ease of fit and function to reduce wear and downtime.  Focusing on a quality product. 
  • Plans and implements project goals to meet timelines and deliverables.  Oversees and directs the development, planning, implementation and maintenance of manufacturing methods, processes and equipment for new or existing products and technologies
  • Responsible for bridging the gap of shared knowledge for continuous improvement between Research and Development (R&D) and Production Tools for smooth transfer to production
  • Oversees the test methods, trials, and applications of all activities performed in tooling repairs for production
  • Report potential troubleshooting and improvement activities with the SMME within the Lodi Site to drive Kaizen, PSP and / CAPA projects
  • Drive standardization of Tooling Repair methods
  • Ensure that tool / mold repairs are compatible for production to established and followed validation procedures
  • Work to strict compliance with good engineering practices (GEP), good manufacturing practices [GMP], good documentation practices [GDP] and QSR guidelines
  • Acts as a liaison with Production and Quality to ensure processes and designs are compatible with Qualified Manufacturing capabilities; meeting quality system regulation (QSR) and compliance requirements

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education or Experience (in years):              

  • Bachelor's degree in field with 5+ years of related work experience OR
  • Master's degree in field with 3+ years of related work experience OR
  • Doctoral degree in field with 0-2 years of related work experience

Knowledge and skills: 

  • Thorough understanding and capability of reading blueprints, drawings, with geometric, dimensional and tolerances (GD&T) a plus
  • Proficient understanding of mathematics; trigonometry and geometry.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written including technical terminology related to injection mold making
  • Capable of writing tooling methodology; plus specifications, procedures and work instructions
  • Strong tooling background – trade-offs between hot/cold runner systems, mold specifications, mold repairs/maintenance
  • Knowledge of machine tools and machining best practices
  • Experience / knowledge of polymers with multiple resins and their behavior with specific tool designs / mechanics for specific application
  • Familiar with validation principles, quality system requirements, and ISO/FDA compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of manufacturing workflows, systems and requirements, including cGMP/GDP practices
  • Possess a successful track record of managing projects, demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills, and is highly results and goal-oriented
  • Demonstrates high flexibility to adapt to changing business environments and effective at handling multiple tooling projects simultaneously and in a timely manner
  • Ability to successfully communicate, negotiate and instigate cooperation with multiple departments


Physical requirements/abilities: 

  • Typical Tooling Shop physical requirements
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time and operate Tooling machines and equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Understanding of scientific molding principles
  • Basic understanding of Lean principles and continuous improvement tools including Kaizen, Problem Solving, Daily Management, 5S, Layered Audits, SMED and Kanban
