Description

The Senior Manager of Program and Portfolio Management is responsible for overall R&D projects and NPD programs/process.  This includes responsibility for oversight of a portfolio of projects, project managers, and the ops budget and resources allocated to them.  Development, implementation, and sustainment of new product development (NPD), including early stage technology and capability (CapDev), process best practices will also be a key function of the role, leveraging tools and experience as appropriate from other Danaher OpCos, as well as developing new processes as need for our portfolio of products and technologies.  The portfolio manager is considered part of the R&D organization and work will be performed located at our Torrance, CA or Brea, CA (BEC LS) facilities in conjunction with Product Management, Marketing and Operations teams.  The project teams will develop LC Columns, sample preparation, and other consumables developments.  

Senior Manager of Program and Portfolio Management role will be based in Torrance, CA site and will report to the Director of R&D.  

Responsibility and Authority

Senior Manager of Program and Portfolio Management will be responsible for all activities within his or her teams.  These include:

* Works with R&D leadership to develop, implement, and sustain/refine best practices in new product development (NPD) process, including early stage technology and capability (CapDev).  
* Process owner for product planning group and related activities and processes
* Support R&D, product management and key stakeholders tracking project status, working with project management to understand and report on any variance to planned budget or scope (e.g. via monthly portfolio update)
*Facilitates product development kaizens and planning utilizing appropriate DBS and other tools
* Owns and Maintains the product/project roadmap for the business
* Supports project justification via business value assessment and NPV
* Works with development managers on roadmaps to help them determine project resource requirements identifying gaps and future needs
* Works with R&D leadership to develop, implement, and sustain/refine best practices in new product development (NPD) process, including early stage technology and capability (CapDev).  
* Facilitates product development kaizens and planning utilizing appropriate DBS and other tools
* Manages and controls variance of financials to budget
* Understands the high level project interdependencies both within the portfolio and between other portfolios
* Supports strategic planning via scope and estimate scenarios and works with R&D, marketing, and business leaders to understand and help refine market strategy from a product timing/affordability perspective
* Applying project management methodology in efforts to: develop new technical capabilities, knowledge and design concepts (R&D), commercialize new scientific and technical capabilities (Commercialization), and to manage the evaluation/resolution of field issues (Sustaining). 

Job Requirements



Qualifications

* Graduate Scientist or engineer in appropriate discipline (Chemistry, Biochemistry, ME, EE)
* 5-10 years of experience in product development, 
* Minimum of 3-5 years as a Project or Portfolio/Program manager, with demonstrated experience in NPD process facilitation or implementation
* Experience in development of complex products as project or portfolio manager, interfacing with senior leadership
* Experience in managing teams working on multiple projects simultaneously
* Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, formal presentation) at all levels of the organization
