JOB SUMMARY:


The Senior Information & Data Scientist will be responsible for leading Innovation Core & Research projects related to best-in-class analytics solutions that complement efforts towards the improvement of both Cepheid’s molecular diagnostic platforms (GeneXpert, Omni, Infinity, etc.) and Cepheid internal customers such as assay developers, automation, manufacturing, engineering, and others. The candidate will be responsible for working on complex problems, discovering technical insights and identifying opportunities using mechanistic modeling, machine learning, algorithmic, data mining and visualization techniques. The candidate should be able to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams; apply a breadth of tools, data sources and analytical techniques to answer a wide range of questions and present the insights concisely and effectively.
In addition, the position will entail working collaboratively with bench scientists to build tools, analyze results, and integrate data. We are seeking a senior level Information and Data Scientist who is passionate about making real differences in the field of molecular diagnostics and is enthusiastic about working in an exciting, fast-paced environment. This position requires a person with a strong commitment to science and technology and with demonstrated knowledge in genomics, bioinformatics, statistics, and programming. The candidate should be energetic, open-minded, detail-oriented and results driven. The candidate should be extremely proactive with a curious attitude and able to thrive in the face of ambiguity; an innate systems-level thought process for coordinating a large number of technically varying initiatives is key. The ability to solve complex problems by taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions is also key. This role is self-driven with guidance provided in only the most complex of situations.
In addition to technical qualifications, the ideal candidate will be highly goal-oriented, organized, and able to thrive in an atmosphere of shifting demands and priorities. As a senior team member, management and ownership of entire research projects or components of research projects is expected; accountability for the performance and results of the Innovation Core informatics team is expected. The candidate should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work in a cross-functional team-based environment as well as with outside collaborators and companies is a must.


ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:


• Overall drives project strategy for the Innovation Core informatics team by setting directions and overseeing project sets
• Improve existing data pipelines to further automate internal workflows
• Automate new assay design by developing machine learning pipelines
• Collaborate with other cross-functional teams globally, including Engineering and IT, to develop large-scale data processing pipelines
• Collaborate internally on software development and/or statistical analysis for scientific research
• Apply classical statistics to mine historical data for research projects
• Contribute development and expertise for ad-hoc analysis on interdisciplinary company projects
• Select, test, and implement bioinformatics pipelines for the analysis, annotation, and interpretation of genomic data for oncology as well as infectious disease applications
• Perform analysis of aggregated results from patient cohorts, applying the appropriate multivariate statistical analysis, machine learning, and visualization methods
• Mine sequencing data and provide feedback to R&D Innovation team
• Present results of analyses to internal stakeholders and customers/collaborator
• Implement quality control metrics and procedures to prevent and detect errors
• Insure that all work is properly documented, code is under change control, and provenance of data is maintained
• Work closely with the innovation core team and IT to build and maintain robust infrastructure
• Perform scientific and statistical analysis using instrument output and modern forensic modeling
• Build and maintain automated sequencing data analysis pipelines by developing specialized and sophisticated data structures and algorithms
• Build partnerships within and outside the team regardless of formal authority
• Dismantle personal knowledge and empower others by mentoring and fostering an environment of growth
• Create value by anticipating and meeting needs of internal and external customers and delivering high-quality results and be accountable for outcomes
• Open and flexible to accommodate and implement new ideas, understand business complexities, nurture innovation and challenge the status quo persistently

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements


Education or Experience:


• Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Biostatistics, or other related field with 8+ years’ experience OR
• Master’s degree with 6+ years of related field experience OR
• Doctoral degree with 3+ years of related field experience
• Management experience

Knowledge and Skills:
• Proficiency in Visual C++ and/or C#
• Proficiency in SQL
• Proficiency in Python
• Experience using Oracle’s Agile
• Advanced statistics knowledge, including proficiency in the use of Minitab for data analysis and presentation
• Working knowledge of design of experiments (DOE) and regression models
• Must understand production datasets and have experience in a manufacturing operations environment
• Maintain organized and complete documentation of activities, and provide regular updates covering progress, problems, and solutions
• Ensure compliance to Quality System requirements
• Provides mentorship and technical training to junior Innovation Core team members
• Proficiency with standard Microsoft computer programs
• Perform required lab and office administrative tasks, including organization, equipment acquisition, and experimental reports/presentations
• Experience in a design-controlled, quality-systems driven environment including familiarity with FDA and ISO 13485 standards
• Detail oriented, proactive, and driven
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Physical requirements/abilities:

• Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks
 
Preferred Requirements:


• Master’s degree in Information & Data Science or a related field is highly preferred
• Proficiency in MATLAB preferred
