Job Purpose
  • A Research Associate - Sample Preparation is an entry-level scientist positions whose primary role is to develop novel and innovative sample preparation solutions that highlight Phenomenex products. 
  • Working in a cross-functional matrix organization with members of R & D, Marketing, and Sales, and under the supervision of a Sr. Scientist, the Research Associate will use their skill and experience to help develop new sample preparation products, find novel ways to apply our existing sample preparation technologies, and collaborate with Key Opinion Leaders to identify possible new sample preparation product opportunities. 
  •  The ideal candidate will have the capacity to identify a sample preparation problem, develop a novel solution in our lab, and then travel to a customer site (if necessary) to help implement that solution.

  • B. S. in Chemistry or related scientific field with at least one year of hands-on laboratory experience (academic or professional) using some form of sample preparation is required.  Experience with Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) is highly desired.
  • Some basic understanding of the principles (mechanistic) of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid-liquid-extraction (LLE) is required.  (You don’t need to be able to write a Ph. D. dissertation on it, but you should have a basic understanding of how it works, from a chemistry point of view).
  • Some basic hands-on experience and working knowledge of analytical chromatography techniques such as Gas Chromatography (GC), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), or LC/MS/MS is required.  You must be able to analyze the samples that you prepare.
  • The capacity to (1) identify and understand a sample preparation challenge (2) perform some basic research into possible solutions based upon a survey of scientific literature (3) execute logical, well thought-out experiments to find the best solution using good laboratory practices (under the guidance and tutelage of a Senior Scientist) and (4) then communicate that solution successfully to target audience. 
  • Logical and thorough troubleshooting skills through using iterative problem-solving.
  • Ability to work on a cross-functional team and to communicate effectively to promote new methods and products to the scientific community is essential.
  • Aid in the trouble shooting and technical support of customers and distributors worldwide.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, legible records of all experiments, time tracking and other required documentations.
  • Maintain all instruments and equipment in excellent condition, keep all work areas neat and clean, and follow all safety procedures without exception.
  • Must be able to work independently, but under the guidance of a Senior-level Scientist.
  • Provide support to Marketing on brochure, web, technical and seminar content.
