A Senior Research Chemist, has at least 15 years of experience in water treatment with extensive knowledge in scale inhibition, corrosion inhibition, flow assurance, and/or wastewater treatment. The optimal candidate may be an expert in one or more of these applications and have a general knowledge of most applications. The ideal candidate will have experience innovating, developing, lab testing and applying chemical treatments in one or more of the following industries: Oil and Gas, Mining, Pulp and Paper, Chemical Processing, Hydrocarbon Processing, Primary Metals or Geothermal. The candidate is expected to have a strong background innovating and bringing concept to commercialization.  Candidates will work closely with the sales team to develop new products and troubleshoot customer issues. Travel could be up to 30% as required to provide technical support to field sales. This role is located in Ashland, Virginia.


  • Contribute to intellectual property development patents and papers.

  • Present papers at technical meetings and conferences.

  • Work closely with the sales team to define customer needs current technology gaps to help grow our business.

  • Make product recommendations for customers based on laboratory testing.

  • Collaborate with other R&D group members on innovative and customer support projects.

  • Independently complete customer support projects to determine the best product for our customers on a case by case basis.

  • Work with marketing to develop marketing literature and case studies.

  • Maintain current training and certifications per field requirements.


  • Travel to customer sites to provide technical support, trial support and help troubleshoot customer problems

  • Demonstrate high level of autonomy, working safely 

  • Comply with laboratory chemical hygiene plan and laboratory housekeeping

  • Develop and document technical procedures

  • Maintain and report data

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements


  • B.S. degree in Chemistry or related field with at least 15 years of experience in water treatment or a higher degree (M.S. or Ph.D) with over 10 years of experience
  • Experience in water treatment related to scale inhibition, corrosion inhibition, flow assurance, wastewater treatment or related applications
  • Technical, Analytical skills and business knowledge
  • Communication and Interpersonal skills; Teamwork and leadership 
  • Organizational skills; Self-management
  • Ability to train less experienced lab personnel
  • Advanced familiarity with common laboratory instruments, equipment, and techniques
  • Routinely required to sit, reach with hands and arms
  • Constantly using hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, and computer keyboards
  • Occasionally required to walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk, hear, and smell.
  • Must occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Use of hazardous chemicals is routine.
