The R&D Hardware Test Engineer will serve as the “Reliability Czar,” supporting a fast-paced team that is developing Cepheid’s next generation medical diagnostic instrument platforms, lab automation and production systems. This hands-on role fits within a team comprised of electrical, mechanical, software and optical engineers to produce molecular diagnostic systems that will be commercialized to become key products in Cepheid's portfolio.


The R&D Hardware Test Engineer/Reliability Czar will architect, design, execute, and analyze the results from varied Test Plans to answer the fundamental question: Do we have a reliable product design?

These tests are designed to establish initial product performance and to verify longevity of that performance over the instrument’s lifetime. You will work with all members of the Instrument Development team to devise and execute applicable (and often novel) test methods on the bench. Tests will assess commercial reliability of: electro-mechanical actuators, integrated firmware systems, optical systems, and thermal control systems in integrated products and in key subsystem components for next-generation products.

You will also interface across the organization, notably with the Quality and New Product Introduction teams.

Job Requirements


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• B.S. in an Engineering or Science discipline), or an equivalent combination of education and experience to perform at this level.
• Self-directed learner – you will be exposed to many new technologies and methods, and must develop background to understand these systems sufficiently to develop credible test methods.
• Thrive in a hands-on setting, at the bench.
• Self-motivated, willing to work outside the job description.
• Familiarity with basic test and measurement equipment (volt meters, microscopes, oscilloscopes, calipers, etc.)
• Demonstrated analytical/experimental problem-solving skills to understand hardware, software, and integrated systems to be able to quickly analyze and resolve system inter-operability problems.
• Working knowledge of statistics and calculating system signal-to-noise, comparing to measurement.
• Ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Medical device or regulated industry experience very desirable.
• Experience with HALT/HAAS testing methodologies
• Experience with MiniTab or similar programs

Physical requirements/abilities

• Ability to lift 25 lbs.
• Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks.
