Principal Systems Engineer

Position Summary

The Project Manager / Principal Systems Engineer will lead and support interdisciplinary project teams to design and develop filtration instruments. He/she can accept dual or alternating roles as Project Manager and Systems Engineer. The position will typically require managing and collaborating with 3rd party vendors that may be located on different continents. This individual can work under considerable time pressure to deliver product launches rapidly. Also, it is expected that this individual can learn and master new technical topics that may be peripheral to his/her current skillset. Furthermore, this person must demonstrate strong leadership qualities and be able to manage ambiguity.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage cross-functional project teams through all phases of product development. (50%)
  • Ensure project execution and completion of deliverables within project schedule.
  • Exhibit leadership traits and strong communication skills.
  • Use critical thinking to identify and challenge faulty assumptions, group-think, and other gaps in logic.
  • Communicate project status, needs, and risks to functional managers at all levels.
  • Lead timeline compression exercises. 
  • Administer project team deliverables within a stage gate new product development (NPD) process. 
Assume engineering design authority for outsourced instrument development projects. (50%)  
  • Collaborate seamlessly with diverse project teams to define user wants and generate design concepts.  
  • Manage relationships with international 3rd party vendors. 
  • Oversee overall design, systems integration, validation, and manufacturing transfer.  
  • Verify that performance meets all specified requirements including regulatory (CE, UL, RoHS, etc.).  
  • Manage technical risks by leading FMEA’s and ensuring timely completion of required actions.  
  • Manage the transfer of design packages to Manufacturing Engineers.  
  • Provide ongoing technical expertise for troubleshooting problems in manufacturing and in the field after product launch. 
  • Travel to worldwide locations as projects require, but typically averaging 15% or less.

Job Requirements


Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant science or engineering field.
  • 7+ years’ project management experience.
  • 7+ years’ experience with electromechanical design and systems integration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with lab water or other water systems.
