We are looking for a highly motivated and driven PhD student to work on the development of innovative flow cytometry based approaches relevant to the field of autoimmune diseases. Both traditional immunophenotyping and functional assays will be envisioned and not only diagnosis or monitoring of patients will be considered for the context of their implementation but also mechanistic studies aiming at a better understanding of the modes of actions of various therapeutic avenues.

The PhD student will be responsible for planning and performing the experiments and reporting and publishing the results in scientific journals and at international conferences. The project will require both an in-depth understanding of the involved immunology and extensive training in flow cytometry so that meaningful high-end flow cytometry could be achieved.

The Department

The PhD student will be working in the Beckman Coulter Immunotech Marseille facility that focus on the development and further production of both diagnostic and research products with a core focus on flow cytometry and immunoassays reagents.  While more than 230 individuals are working on the premises, a specificity of this site is its high R&D density with more than 70 associates. The student will be joining the Life Sciences Research team that is involved in the identification, evaluation and further early development of new product concepts (essentially reagents and workflows) in the broad area of Life Sciences. However the general emphasis is on flow cytometry and associated techniques, other technologies (automation, immunoassays, separation sciences and mass spectrometry) spreading across Life Sciences are regularly considered as a function of the exploratory project. Due to the nature of its work, the innovation team is evolving in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment. Finally, possibility to spend parts of the training period at the Leiden University Medical Center, Karolinska Institute, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, University of Glasgow and Eberhard Karls universiteit Tuebingen will be offered.

Job Requirements


Your profile

You have a Master degree in biomedical sciences, preferably with extensive training in cellular immunology. While previous exposure to flow cytometry might be helpful, it is not mandatory to apply to this position as extensive training will be provided. A special interest for technology related projects is however strongly recommended exactly as an appeal for translational research topics. You are a highly motivated independent team player with a flexible work approach and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. English language skills are essential for communication within the team and the consortium, but also for scientific presentations and publications. PhD-students involved in this project will make short-term exchange visits with the institutes of the other partners.

We offer

You will be employed on the basis of 35 hours per week. Appointment is for a maximum of three years, to be completed with a doctoral thesis. You will be offered an attractive package that will be detailed along the interviewing process.
