Purpose of Position:

The purpose of the Operations Manager is to provide leadership, direction and hands on involvement while managing personnel and processes involved in areas responsibility. The Operations Manager is responsible for driving the continuous improvement of our processes and systems in support of strategic and policy deployment objectives. The Operations Manager is responsible for production capacity planning, capital project justification, risk analysis, and new product/process definition with R&D.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for managing daily issues in assigned manufacturing area
  • Responsible for managing and mentoring of Supervisors, professional staff, and/or production associates 
  • Drive process improvements to achieve Policy Deployment (PD) goals for safety, quality, delivery and cost
  • Provide input and recommendations for the identification and selection of improvement projects
  • Participate in, facilitate, and/or train kaizen or improvement project teams
  • Responsible for establishing and meeting project quality, delivery, and cost objectives
  • Develop and implement effective means of communicating safety, quality, delivery and cost related metrics to Teams
  • Interface effectively with other Managers to achieve overall goals using shared resources
  • Complete performance and development reviews for direct report associates
  • Work with Design and Implementation teams on manufacturability, capability, reliability reviews
  • Manage labor availability to complete work load and work to enhance cross-training for increased labor flexibility
  • Assist in data collection and analysis for new business opportunities
  • Monitor departmental budgets and assist in defining annual operating and capital budgets. Has budgetary approval responsibility.
  • Assist in achieving Policy Deployment and Strategic Plan objectives and participate in monthly PD reviews.
  • Perform benchmarking studies as required
  • Drive “best practices” in all areas of responsibility
  • Assist in the development of the strategic plan in support of area
  • Create and lead PD at Genba visual management process to support PD objectives
  • Define manufacturing requirements for suppliers
  • Support key account and other special customer requests
  • May assist R&D in developing new products and defining manufacturing opportunities.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in a technical (physical science or engineering) or business related field or equivalent work experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in direct supervisory or facilitation (also experience with cross-functional work groups)
  • Knowledge of quality principles and tools (problem analysis, statistical tools, design of experiments, control charts, and other quality methodologies)
  • Mechanical skills / abilities preferred
  • Oceanographic instrumentation experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of various manufacturing/distribution processes preferred
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively interface with a variety of people at various technical and management levels
  • Good computer skills (work processing, spreadsheets, graphics, statistical tools, etc.)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time and project management
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing a plus
  • Excellent presentation skills
