Position Summary

Our Biologics Program is focused on Cell Line Development for therapeutic or diagnostics antibody production and Synthetic Biology. Molecular Devices has a leadership position in several technologies in Cell Line Development including clone selection, imaging and antibody characterization. As part of Danaher, our team works together with teams at Beckman Coulter Life Sciences and Pall.


This position is part of a team that will develop cutting edge analytic instrumentation used in drug discovery and characterization. The candidate will be a member of a R&D team that works with customers to define solutions that give Molecular Devices a unique position in this market.


This is a technical role dedicated to scoping, development and implementation of design solutions to meet customer needs in the development of new analytic solutions. The successful candidate will participate in mechanical design and verification activities. Interaction with cross functional team members is essential and will include Sales, Marketing, Service, and Operations. 


Responsibilities:


  • Analyze the tolerance (GD&T) of mechanical components and assemblies

  • Design and integrate mechanical components and subassemblies into instrumentation using SolidWorks.

  • Understand the needs of customers in biologics markets

  • Work with cross-functional teams to identify gaps in product offerings

  • Translate project requirements and customer needs into design concepts

  • Perform static and dynamic mechanics analysis, stress simulations, air flow studies and dimensional tolerance.

  • Create a shared vision of customer acceptance so project teams understand “done”

  • Work with suppliers on the fabrication of prototype and final parts (machined components, sheet metal components, mechanical systems, testing fixtures, manufacturing fixtures, and molded components).

  • Coordinate designs with other key functions including Assay, Optical, Electrical and Systems Engineering.

  • Attend regular and periodic engineering team meetings and progress reviews

  • Perform system build, testing and mechanical debug

  • Learn and use DBS tools such as FMEA, Problem Solving, Poka-Yoke and Standard Work to achieve quality, delivery and cost targets and to continuously improve processes  

  • Provide engineering documentation for release

  • Attend customer / site visits and some offsite meetings (up to ~10% travel)

Job Requirements



Qualifications



  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or advanced degree required;

  • 3+ years industry design experience required;
  • Experience with SolidWorks required;

  • Proven, hands-on mechanical aptitude;

  • Excellent mechanical troubleshooting skills;

  • Experience with instrumentation used in the Life Sciences preferred;


  • Experience in planning and conducting voice of customer (VoC) studies to align with customers’ needs to drive product specifications preferred;


  • Experience working successfully in a team environment;


  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail;


  • Ability to communicate clearly and help the team succeed; and,


  • Results oriented – has track record for delivering results, takes ownership and is accountable.

 Other Preferred Skills:



  • Familiarity with existing Molecular Devices bioproduction products

  • Experience and skill diagnosing issues with complex integrated software and hardware platforms

  • Experience working professionally with product development teams

  • Familiarity with product development engineering methodologies

  • Experience in fluidics, optical systems and/or product manufacturing
