We are looking for a passionate Mechanical Engineer to join the Advanced Workflow Engineering Solutions team who loves to create new things. 

The successful candidate has expertise in working with designers, scientists and engineers to build great things, ensure product excellence on time and on budget, an ability to quickly improvise and iterate, and a passion for driving profitable growth by building innovative technologies that help our customers achieve their aspirations. You need to be willing to apply boundless energy, enthusiasm, and learn fast in order to succeed in this critical role. From custom optical systems enhancements, new hardware and software applications and features, to automated workflow, the AWES team works on value added solutions to enhance our Life Science Instruments including Cellular Imagers, Detectors and Colony Pickers.

This is a technical role dedicated to the scoping/ideation, design, development and implementation/build of custom solutions to meet specific customer needs on a wide range of Molecular Devices standard product offerings.  The successful candidate will participate in mechanical design and verification activities, documentation, as well as build and validation in our San Jose lab. Interaction with cross functional team members is essential and will include Sales, Marketing, Service, Product Development and Operations.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Design mechanical systems from initial concept to final product delivery
  • Work directly with customers, applications scientists and other engineering team members to define solutions to unique problems
  • Analyze the tolerance (GD&T) of mechanical components and assemblies
  • Participate in design reviews
  • Work with suppliers on the fabrication of prototype and final parts
  • Create engineering documentation and drawings as appropriate 
  • Coordinate designs with other key functions including Mechanical, Optical and Systems Engineering
  • Perform system build, testing and mechanical debug 
  • Participate in formulating and carrying out company policies, objectives and programs for the Advanced Workflow Engineering Solutions group.
  • Learn and use DBS tools such as FMEA, Problem Solving, Poka-Yoke and Standard Work to achieve quality, delivery and cost targets and to continuously improve processes

Job Requirements


  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Optical Systems Engineering
  • 3  plus years industry design experience
  • Proven, hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent mechanical troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work on cross-functional teams as well as independently
  • Can quickly convert requirements into design and part fabrication
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new projects and challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Results-driven individual with passion for customer satisfaction and working in fast-paced environment
  • Solid experience with SolidWorks
  • Ability to work well in an team environment
  • Experience with Molecular Devices instruments is desirable
