This position will be responsible for delivering key insights into cell line development processes employed by biopharmaceutical companies for drug R&D, to help the company develop new products that address emerging needs, target new applications to enhance utilization of Molecular Devices products, and operate a laboratory that houses state-of-the-art cell culture equipment.  

The Manager, Sr. Application Scientist is a technology leader within the marketing organization providing technical guidance to new product development and commercial teams on emerging opportunities. The person will be the leader of the cell line development laboratory and may manage application scientists to accomplish their key deliverables. The position is at the cross-section of R&D, Marketing, Sales and Support functions within the company and thus enables development in any one of several disciplines within Molecular Devices and across Danaher.


  • Manage function of the cell line development laboratory and its personnel [MRM1], as well as external technical collaborations.

  • Deliver application notes describing use of Molecular Devices products in existing cell line development workflows as well as emerging paradigms within biopharmaceutical R&D.

  • Coordinate the development of key insights into emerging new technologies addressing needs in biotherapeutics R&D and, support development of business strategy for Molecular Devices.

  • Assess and develop internal talent through technical and leadership mentoring in a highly engaged team to create future application managers and R&D leaders

  • Execute on deliverables within defined timelines and measure impact on absorption of delivered information in the marketplace.

Job Requirements


  • B.S. or B.A. in life science related discipline and laboratory experience required; advanced education is preferred

  • 5+ years of experience in a cell culture laboratory in biopharmaceutical industry

  • Minimum 2 years people manager experience

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills required; experience working in a matrix environment and managing multiple priorities and projects with dynamic timelines to execution

  • Focused and results oriented

  • Experience working in a highly technical organization interacting with scientific and technical personnel, including field sales personnel and engineers

  • Very strong work ethic and comfortable with extensive travel

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with sense of urgency

  • Courageous problem solver

  • Proven experience writing technical reports and/or journal articles.

  • Proven experience presenting scientific talks at conferences and trade meetings.

  • Proven experience managing complex tasks including project management

  • Proven experience working with confidential or sensitive information

  • Results oriented – has track record for delivering results, takes ownership and is accountable
