Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Senior Mechanical Engineer to be a part of our R&D team in Melbourne. This role plays a key part in providing technical support to contribute to the development and delivery of a range of  Leica products. Reporting to the Mechanical Resource Group Manager, you will undertake professional engineering tasks of a complex, interdisciplinary and technically challenging nature, including taking responsibility for the technical adequacy and safety of design products.
We are looking for someone who possesses a natural curiosity, a positive attitude coupled with personal integrity and a capacity for resilience in the face of change.

Key responsibilities of the role include;
  • Managing a team of multi-discipline engineers to coordinate the provision of the Engineering department resources and functions.
  • Provide technical leadership to a team of skilled mechanical engineers responsible for new product development and the upgrade / improvement of existing products
  • Develop and contribute to standard work for the mechanical engineering discipline and wider project to ensure effective execution
  • Provide leadership and drive engagement within the team and projects
  • Recruit and manage the performance and development of the team in line with program and business needs
  • Deliver robust and high quality mechanical solutions that are compliant with all applicable business and regulatory requirements
  • Develop instrument mechanical architecture and ensure quality of group mechanical deliverables
  • Budget setting, tracking and forecasting for project mechanical effort
  • Lead mechanical DFx efforts  
  • Provide expert support to the rest of the business in response to requests for assistance in matters relating to mechanical engineering product/process issues
  • Contribute to establishment of and continuous improvement of mechanical systems processes and procedures to support business needs and satisfy applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Build on design expertise in at least two of the following disciplines: Robotics, Mechanisms, Structures, System analysis, Fluidics, Thermal control

Job Requirements



Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following skills and experience: 

Professional Experience

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with at least 10 years of relevant experience developing complex electro-mechanical devices
  • 8 years’ experience of developing medical products
  • Competent with MS Word and expert in Excel
  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing methods and working with suppliers
  • Experience with ISO13485 and FDA QSR 820
  • Experience generating complex technical documents including design descriptions, and reports
  • Proven ability to lead, train, mentor and coach others
  • Understanding the business implications of design decisions
  • Attention to detail
  • Positive, self-motivated disposition and personal accountability
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Highly Desirable:

  • Interest in Histology
  • Experience with the design, development and manufacturing of diagnostic medical instrumentation and/or consumables
  • More than one engineering qualification
  • Overseas experience of medical device development
