Description

This is a critical and highly visible role within X-Rite and the Danaher Product Identification platform intellectual property (IP) team. The attorney/agent will work directly with R&D, marketing, legal and other functions to help guide the development of new products; identify and protect inventions either directly or with outside counsel; support freedom to operate and other IP related assessments (both offensive/defensive); and support IP related contract negotiations  


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:   
•    Active support of technical and business teams from identification/conception of ideas through patent grant
•    Counsel R & D and marketing departments throughout product design and development process regarding intellectual property protection
•    Perform patent searches
•    Monitor competitor IP activity
•    Support/lead Freedom to Operate activities
•    Defend X-Rite intellectual property against third party challenges
•    Support IP agreement negotiations
•    Analyze third-party products
•    Support activities relating to   third party rights, including assessing infringement, design around options, and patent opposition/nullity actions. Internal counseling on all issues of the intellectual property rights
•    Cooperation with commercial and IP attorneys worldwide
•    Negotiation and administration of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDA)
•    Functional supervision of patent assistant

Job Requirements



Qualifications

•    Masters Degree in engineering (electronics, physics, software engineering)
•    5+ years working experience in the intellectual property department of a high-tech company or in a law firm
•    Authorized representative before the European Patent Office
•    In-depth legal knowledge and keen interest in technical issues
•    Knowledge of the European (possibly swiss) AND US patent law system
•    Excellent analytical, interpersonal and communication skills
•    Team player
•    Champion of continuous improvement
Excellent knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken OTHER and SOFT SKILLS:
 
•    Comfortable to work in a “matrix organization”
•    Experience in working with external consultant organizations (FTO and search) and external law firms
•    Experience with IP processes typical of large scale organizations
•    Pro-active communicator
•    Self-motivated and action oriented
•    Ability to manage multiple competing priorities
•    Does not let perfect get in the way of better
•    Technically curious – possibly having a “techno hobby”
•    Deals effectively with “work peaks”
