The Director, Research and Development is responsible to drive new product development, design modifications, and innovation for the Core Histology portfolio with strategic prioritization and emphasis on consumables and close ties to the Core Histology equipment portfolio. Responsible to lead and develop the R&D team according to the Danaher Leadership Anchors (e.g. Charts the Course, Builds Teams, Drives Innovation, Acts with Integrity). 

Major Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic technology leadership and direction to the Core Histology consumables business to drive competitive advantage and enable markets on a global basis to realize significant market share growth.
  • Builds long-term strategic product roadmaps, in partnership with the Product Management, Marketing and Sales to integrate the efforts of the global operation.
  • Leads product development team in the design and development of new products and design transfer to manufacturing.  Supports product lifecycle initiatives.
  • Sets a successful direction by establishing a clear and compelling vision. Instills a sense of urgency and motivates team to meet deadlines and stretch goals. Sets high expectations and holds others and self-accountable for the results expected.
  • Grows and fosters talent and develops the technical and leadership capabilities of the R&D team. Responsible to develop associates through continuous development planning (D4G); drive successful and measurable employee engagement.
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of the relevant technology trends and competitive developments as input into portfolio strategy.
  • Ensures that the R&D team maintains compliance with appropriate ISO, FDA and GLP guidelines.
  • Acts as key scientific liaison/interface with regulatory bodies, quality assurance groups and customers.
  • Foresees how decisions may impact the financial state of the rest of the organization; effectively planning and managing to budgets.
  • Acts as key advisor to the business leader on technical matters.
  • Effectively use Danaher Business Systems (DBS) tools to drive continuous improvement.

Job Requirements


Education, Experience, Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, engineering or other technical discipline required; Advanced degree is desirable.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience with increasing responsibility leading product development teams in regulated environments. Experience in Analytical Chemistry or Materials Science preferred.
  • Direct management experience with proven track record of building successful teams, developing talent.
  • Strong business focus and proven track record of taking regulated product(s) or consumables from inception, through development and successful commercialization.
  • Deep understanding of design control, stage gate development, ISO and other regulatory requirements for the design, development and manufacturing of medical devices or similar regulated products.
  • Experience effectively planning and managing to budgets.
  • Demonstrated experience managing of intellectual property creation and portfolio management.
  • Strategic thinking and planning ability.
  • Experience identifying and scoping opportunities for new products.


  • Domestic and international travel required.
