Director, R&D



Position Summary and Overview:

  • To lead and expand the Newcastle R&D team, developing the group into a whole as a leading edge cancer diagnostics unit aligned with the Advanced Staining vision.  This unit will successfully transition innovative projects from ideation stage to commercially viable products within set time parameters and in line with regulatory requirements, creating implementing and driving strategies to support short and long term business needs,
  • To work as a member of the Newcastle Senior Management Team, representing R&D, supporting the site from a management point of view and helping to maintain effective cross departmental working.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to the R&D team.  Build the capability of the team – attract, recruit, retain and develop top talent.  
  • Ensure all R&D projects are managed using the appropriate business processes, monitored against project objectives, timescales and to budget
  • Provide both operational and scientific guidance on processes as required
  • Work with the QA and Regulatory team to ensure that all work complies with regulatory directives in Leica’s focus markets
  • Contribute to the building of a synergistic and collaborative partnership within the Advanced Staining and Imaging Leadership team. Work with the adjacent business units (Melbourne, Amsterdam and Danvers) as well as  Innovation, BD  and CDX teams to assess potential opportunities in the marketplace through building relationships with key opinion leaders at the highest level 
  • Participate in customer, collaborator or distributor visits, demonstrations, and training as requested. 
  • Implement effective system for regular resource planning to ensure the available resource is used optimally, development plans are in place for high potential R&D staff in talent review, and a structured succession plan for growth developed


Additional Health and Safety Responsibilities:

  • Provide so far as is reasonably practicable a healthy and safe workplace for employees, contractors and visitors
  • Support EHS framework and assist in annual planning, implementation, evaluation and review
  • Work with EHS Manager to implement policies, procedures and support improvements
  • Support best practice safety performance levels and ensure business complies with all relevant EHS regulations
  • Be actively involved in Workplace Inspections and Near Miss and Incident reporting
  • Discuss and review statistical data (near misses, incident reports, etc) at monthly management meetings
  • Ensure safety performance is included in annual staff reviews


Job Requirements



Qualifications

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Proven track record of IVD  product development, including having been personally responsible for managing innovative, Class III R&D projects
  • Confident leadership style with experience of leading (remotely) a sizable R&D team.
  • Experience of relevant Regulatory and Quality Procedures
  • Ideally record in development role in histopathology and/or cancer biology
  • Ideally experience of Molecular and other diagnostic techniques, in particular immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation techniques

Education List of Education, Certifications, Training:

  • Relevant degree in Science field
  • Further  relevant degree MSc or PHD essential


Travel % of Travel, include approximate overnight stays per week:

  • Travel expectations within this role are moderate (<40%)
