The Director, Health, Safety, Security and Environment will provide leadership and expertise to drive best in class performance.  The successful candidate will partner with operational leadership to establish vision and strategy and advance a culture of safety throughout the company.  He/she will support planning and implementation of safety, health and environmental programs to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment for every employee and sub-contractor.  The role will also provide technical and compliance expertise, support the operations of safety for our manufacturing facilities, and ensure proper reporting practices of all workers' compensation, general liability and claims.

This position is responsible for working with the corporate EHS team to develop and execute a consistent global strategy for EHS management systems including incident reporting and management, EHS performance scorecards, business intelligence, predictive analytics, and field applications. These Global Systems enable efficient visibility into performance and actions across all segments and functions, efficiently supporting continual EHS performance improvement.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide senior management with guidance on short and long-term safety strategy to reduce incident frequency and severity.  This includes recommendations on metric tracking, safety initiatives, enhanced employee engagement, and effective communication strategies.
  • Partner with company leadership and plant leaders to drive safe behaviors, good habits and a strong safety culture with all employees/teams.
  • Provide technical and compliance expertise to business leaders and personnel at all levels.
  • Ensure plants are complying with federal, state and local safety regulations by keeping abreast of existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation, interpreting standards, enforcing adherence to regulation and advising management on needed actions.
  • Drives implementation of strategic safety initiatives to achieve safety objectives; identifies elements of change required to support the safety strategy; encourages management teams to balance short-term demands with long-term benefits of strategic safety programs; inspires commitment and involvement with safety objectives and programs.
  • Conduct periodic audits of operations in coordination with local safety managers and business leaders, provide appropriate levels of support, and assist in tracking audits to completion.
  • Support plant safety leaders in setting direction and content of safety programs, training, trend analysis, and best practice rollouts.  Help to facilitate/conduct required training for managers and employees.
  • Strategically supports existing EHS Management Systems and information channels across all business segments, enabling others to provide direct tactical support within business segments and functions as needed.
  • Develops and executes strategy to streamline existing EHS systems, to reduce complexity and costs without adversely impacting effectiveness and performance.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental(preferred), Health & Safety or related field (natural sciences, engineering, chemistry, OH&S or similar).
  • A minimum of 10+ years of work experience in the Environmental, Health and Safety field with increasing responsibility, including experience leading and directing safety teams. (large organization preferred)
  • Safety certifications preferred, e.g. CSP, CMSP, etc.
  • Ideal candidate would have advanced knowledge of OSHA, DOT, FRA and worker's compensation compliance standards.  OSHA and/or MSHA instructor certification is a plus.
  • Demonstrated success in improving safety performance and establishing best practices.  Proven examples of engagement across all levels of an organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.  Strong self-motivation skills
  • Analytical ability and process improvement knowledge.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and regulations.
  • Excellent leadership, program and project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Travel 50% of time.
