In this role, you will join a diverse team of five scientists developing and testing new Capillary Electrophoresis reagents, methods, and consumables products at a very rapid pace.  SCIEX customers need these products urgently to speed their development of cutting-edge pharmaceuticals that relieve suffering and save lives.  The team is responsible for design and evaluation of new coatings, reagents, standards, and methods that meet specific customer, regulatory, manufacturability and environmental requirements.”

The aspect of speed in going from a customer need to a released product (in some cases in as little as 3-4 months!) is an important part of where we are headed.

  • Plan and organize R&D efforts including moderate risk design, implementation, and experimental evaluation.  Primary focus will be on new and improved reagents, kits, and methods for sample preparation, electrophoretic separation, detection, and data analysis.
  • Present and document work in the form of invention disclosures, internal reviews and reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at international scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with external experts and entities in vetting next-generation concepts and technologies for use in future product innovations.  Utilize leadership skills to negotiate, persuade, and build consensus among team members.
  • Build standard work and best practices for the design of CE consumables and assays, including statistical analysis, reliability testing, shelf life testing, and performance verification.
  • Evaluate and oversee implementation of new designs from concept to manufacturing
  • Participate on small cross-functional teams in sustaining engineering activities, problem solving and root cause analyses to support product designs in the field.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree with 2 or more years of industry experience or master’s degree with 0-2 years of industry experience, plus significant experience in at least one of: Analytical Chemistry, Separations Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Biochemistry, or Applied Analytical Science, or its equivalent. 
  • Preference given to candidates who possess a PhD.
  • Experience with separation techniques such as capillary electrophoresis or liquid chromatography, microfluidics, and optical detection (including UV absorbance, laser induced fluorescence, imaging, and fluorescent labels) is advantageous.
  • Experience with the handling, purification, fluorescent labeling, and analysis of biopharmaceuticals, nucleic acids, or monoclonal antibodies, including liquid handling automation, is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated experience in design and development of analytical methods involving separation and analysis of biomolecules, preferably in a commercial setting using an established design and development process.
  • Strong practical troubleshooting skills are required.
  • Proactive, results-oriented, self-motivated team player with growing leadership skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry and coupling microfluidic separations with MS is advantageous.

Additional Requirements: 
  • Has familiarity with quality management systems and systems engineering concepts, especially the ability to write requirements, author verification procedures, and conduct FMEA is highly desirable.
  • Can demonstrate an innovative approach to design and drive development projects from concept to completion.
  • Must have a passion for quality and be dedicated to achieving results that meet customer needs.
