Beckman Coulter Life Sciences seeks a highly professional person to join its San Jose R&D team. You will report to the Director of R&D and will be responsible for managing consumables product technology and engineering from concept to production release for our expanding portfolio of proprietary Echo® Qualified consumables. A systems engineering approach is essential as these consumables are the key interface between the physics of our Acoustic Droplet Ejection technology and our customers’ biological assays. You will lead technical teams and execute tasks on-time and to specification.

Job Requirements


  • BS/MS/PhD in engineering, materials, or physics
  • 10+ years’ experience
  • 5+ years of consumables design and development
  • 5+ years of technical leadership
  • Leadership of multi-disciplinary engineering development teams
  • Track record of successful NPI
  • Project management for engineering development
  • Management of plastics vendors and tooling development 
  • Development of medium-to-high production volume products (100k+ /yr)

Technical Qualifications

  • Expert in development of new consumables products and integration into instrument platforms

  • Highly capable in technical risk assessment, mitigation planning, and mitigation execution
  • Ability to manage plastics vendors for product DFM and multi-cavity tooling development, as well as tooling life cycle management
  • Strong understanding of consumables manufacturing, supply chain, and QC
  • Skilled in plastic materials & design of plastic consumables.
  • Familiar with plastic surface treatments & required manufacturing processes
  • Conversant in adjacent engineering disciplines

Management Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams
  • Skilled at managing and mentoring staff
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and thorough
  • Rigorous in applying development processes and methodologies, including design controls, design verification, & validation
  • Basic understanding of the development activities required of Marketing, Finance, Manufacturing, and Service
  • Excellent understanding of product configuration management & PLM systems
  • Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • High levels of integrity, transparency, & ownership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Conversant with project collaboration tools

  • Understanding of assembly techniques such as ultrasonic welding and other bonding methods.
  • Broad understanding of various manufacturing processes for components & assemblies
  • Experience in development of capital equipment for the life sciences
  • Experience working within cross-functional project team structure
