Description

CNC MACHINIST

Pay commensurate with level of skills, education and

experience

BEGINNER MACHINIST:

Has demonstrated proficiency and at least one year of

experience with set up and operation of 1 machine or piece

of equipment in machine shop. (CNC lathes or machining

centers). Machine setup and offsets are performed by the

operator, with minimal or no assistance. This is an entrylevel

position into the department.

INTERMEDIATE MACHINIST:

Has demonstrated proficiency and at least three years of

experience with set up and operation of operation of at least

3 machines or pieces of equipment in machine shop. This

may include multiple lathes or multiple mills or a combination

of either. Can efficiently setup and operate CNC mills,

machining centers and/or lathes on a simple to moderate

operation. Perform 1st piece article and do inspection report.

Work with programmers to maximize efficiency.

ADVANCED MACHINIST:

Has demonstrated proficiency and at least 5 years of

experience with set up and operation of all machines and

equipment in machine shop. Can efficiently setup and

operate all CNC mills, machining centers and lathes on a

simple to complex operation. Trouble shoots programs and

machines. Train other machinist and work with programmers

to maximize efficiency.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE

Beginner MACHINIST:

• Proficient in basic shop math including combinations of

positive and negative numbers, decimals and fractions.

• Able to calculate tolerance zones.

• Understands diameters and radius.

• Correctly uses basic measuring instruments such as

micrometers, depth gages, bore gages, dial calipers, etc.

• Has basic metal cutting knowledge, cutting speeds and

feeds, and thread formation.

• Knows how to properly use inserts, taps, end mills, and

work holding devices.

• Has basic understanding of SPC and is able to use

sound judgment to interpret production documents to meet

production standards.

• Knows how to proficiently use basic hand tools such as;

files, deburring tools, pneumatic tools, etc.

• Knows how to interpret tool and part drawings including, but

not limited to, geometrical tolerance and manually calculated

dimensions.

• Knows when, why and how to change worn tooling.

Intermediate MACHINIST (in addition to beginner):

• Knowledgeable in setting up CNC machines including, but

not limited to; making inserts changes, tool offsets, boring

chuck jaws, changing chucks, changing draw bars and

tooling changes.

• Must be proficient in shop mathematics in order to;

calculate tool offsets, home positions, and verify print

dimensions. Has basic understanding of geometry and

trigonometry.

• Can interpret and use complicated prints (including multiple

views and 3 dimensional details), specifications, charts, and

tables.

• Machining knowledge equivalent to at least 3 years training

in machining trade and/or machinist apprenticeship program,

which includes production operation of CNC equipment.

• Able to interpret quality operational procedures and

manuals to meet quality standards.

• Able to use all applicable measuring instruments including;

Micro-hite, comparator, borematics, pitch micrometers and

profilometer.

Advanced MACHINIST (in addition to beginner &

intermediate):

• Can quickly and proficiently interpret and use complicated

prints (including multiple views and 3 dimensional details),

specifications, sketches, charts, and tables.

• Machining knowledge equivalent to 5+ years in CNC

machining. Machining apprenticeship program, which

includes production operation of CNC equipment preferred.

Qualifications - External

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Beginner MACHINIST:

• Efficiently operates CNC lathes and/or machining centers,

conventional mills and/or lathes after the machine has

been setup by the operator, with minimal or no assistance.

Setup to include insert changes and offsets, installation of

tooling, loading of program, initial dry runs, and first piece

inspection.

• Loads and unloads parts on fixtures or in chucks.

• Maintains parts in tolerance by making tool offsets.

• Understands the machine zero point and axis orientation.

• Able to touch off or qualify any tooling in the machine with

little or no assistance.

• Operates machine in a safe manner in all modes, manual

or automatic.

* Checks first piece and own work during operation and

makes cutting tool offsets adjustments to ensure parts are

machined to specifications.

* Correctly completes DIR and SPC documentation.

* Maintains an acceptable production rate based on preestablished

standards, while producing products that meet all

quality, drawing and routing requirements.

• Uses sound judgment to plan, perform and make decisions

as to the sequence of setups, operations and processes

within the limitations of recognized, or standard, methods

and procedures in order to meet production schedules.

Intermediate MACHINIST (in addition to beginner):

• Efficiently operate and setup CNC mills, machining centers

and/or lathes on simple to moderate operations.

• Efficiently plan, perform and make decisions as to the

sequence of setups, operations and processes within

the limitations of recognized or standard methods and

procedures.

• Performs first piece inspection on new setups by measuring

dimensions on machined part and compare dimensions to

the print.

• Recognize tool wear, poor finishes, insufficient cuts, etc.

and, make recommendations to CNC Programming to adjust

feeds, speeds and depth of cut.

• Suggest improvements to programming for better utilization

of tooling and equipment.

• Maintains or exceeds an acceptable production rate based

on pre-established standards, while producing products

which meet all quality, drawing and routing requirements.

Advanced MACHINIST (in addition to beginner &

intermediate):

• Is a “keyholder”, is authorized to edit programs and is

responsible for all program integrity, including uploading and

downloading programs. Assist other machinist in editing

programs.

• Does prove out of new setups with manufacturing

engineering, interprets CNC program content to recognize

and correct problems.

• Makes programming changes to adjust for excessive tool

wear.

• Consistently maintains or exceeds an acceptable

production rate based on pre-established standards, while

producing products which meet all quality, drawing and

routing requirements.

• Make suggestions in fixture design and/or tooling

improvements.

• Does prototype work, works independently and is one of

the “core” employees in the department.

• Actively participate in the “Continuous Improvement”

program (OFI program - goal is 4 per year).

• Assist other machinist’s in checking their own work and

adjust processes.

GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Beginner MACHINIST:

• Efficiently performs secondary operations that could include

setup and/or operation on simple

machines or processes, can include drill press, stamping

press, deburring, etc.

• Properly rust proof and package parts, as needed.

• Participate in KAIZEN events, Setup Reduction Program

and identify ways to implement general cost savings.

Intermediate MACHINIST (in addition to beginner):

• Trains coworkers in a patient and positive manner.

Advanced MACHINIST (in addition to beginner

& intermediate):

• Through experience, knowledge and a positive attitude, is

considered a mentor or “GO-TO” person by coworkers.

Train’s coworkers in a patient and positive manner on job

functions and tasks and is an example to others on how to

train.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Restrictions are limited only by the individual’s inability to

perform essential job duties and where an unsafe condition

would result for the individual or surrounding employees.

Light to Moderate Physical - frequently lifting or moving 5 to

25 pounds from three to six hours daily or frequently lifting or

moving 25 - 50 pounds. Based on product being machined

the weight will vary from very light weight parts to heavy

weight parts. Continuous mental and visual attention is

required. Diversified operations require constant alertness or

activity.
