Associate Scientist

Position Objective:

This is a unique chance to work for a large and dynamic global organisation. An opportunity has now become available for an Associate Scientist to join the Microbiology Laboratory team in Portsmouth.  In this role, you will be assigned responsibility for laboratory projects, generating test data to specified protocols.  You will play a key role in our SLS Lab team supporting our customers in the Biopharmaceutical industry who use Pall products in the sterile filtration of their drug products.

In this role the Associate Scientist will:

Test work

  • Perform routine assignments with guidance and direction from others. Write test reports.
  • Test preparation
  • Review job request, relevant safety data and fully understand requirements in accordance with laboratory SOPs
  • Determine availability of required equipment and materials – prepare or order required materials
  • Review timelines and discuss schedule conflicts or modifications with laboratory management (and project manager, where necessary)
  • Document preparation appropriately using datasheets or laboratory notebooks
  • Performing test
  • Assemble test apparatus
  • Correctly operate, understand and be able to troubleshoot all equipment/instrumentation necessary to support testing
  • Perform test work according to laboratory request requirements. Record raw data directly onto datasheets or into laboratory notebook. Immediately notify laboratory management of any test delays, problems or deviations

Test completion

  • Disassemble and clean test equipment and work area
  • Record any remaining test information
  • Create an accurate and timely laboratory report reflective of the laboratory request requirements. Report hours spent on project
  • Responsibilities specific to Validation Laboratory
  • A member of a team of approximately 18 scientists working in the Validation Laboratory performing test work to support customers in the Biopharmaceutical industry.
  • The role requires generation of test data using microbiological and biopharmaceutical process-related test methods to specified protocols.
  • An Associate Scientist will be expected to document non-conformances and initiate exception reports in a timely manner as well as participating in investigations as required.
  • An Associate Scientist will typically be allocated responsibility for completion of up to six tests each week in addition to undertaking general laboratory support activities:
    • Monitor stocks of consumables and raise purchase requisitions as required. Ensure certificates of conformance are received, checked and filed for all relevant items.
    • Maintain storage areas for customer test samples (pharmaceutical products), dispose of samples via the appropriate waste stream as required.
    • Assist with equipment calibration and maintenance, autoclave validation, maintenance of stocks of Pall test articles, environmental monitoring, and completion of applicable documentation.
    • Assist other members of the team to complete their defined responsibilities when required.

Supporting activities

  • Understand how various laboratory systems (including purchasing, calibration, materials inventory) are maintained. Responsibility for maintenance of such a system may be assigned
  • Assist with general laboratory housekeeping
  • Develop technical contribution
  • Attend training courses as required
  • Follow assigned work schedule and meet expected target dates
  • Attend customer audits as required

Job Requirements


The successful applicant will have:

  • Degree or equivalent in Science (Microbiology/Biology) or the equivalent work experience that provides knowledge and exposure to fundamental theories and concepts.

  • Use existing procedures to solve standard problems; analyse information and standard practices to make judgements

  • Knowledge of fundamental laboratory techniques and measurement methods

  • Exchange straightforward information, ask questions and check for understanding

  • Practical ability to perform test work and execute work instructions

  • Good written and verbal communication

  • Conversant with PC based programmes
