Position Summary and Overview:

This role is responsible for supporting Leica Biosystems to remain and expand as an effective and efficient developer of high quality new products and to ensure cost effective and timely

product development.

Major Responsibilities:


  • To develop and evaluate FISH/CISH assays for in vitro diagnostic (IVD). Projects may also include working with antibodies, detection systems or ancillary reagents.
  • To drive the development of robust IVD assays, ensuring that delivery of the project to business is within budget and on schedule.
  • To devise detailed plans for the development, verification and validation of new products. This requires a comprehensive literature search, a review of existing/rival products to use as comparator tests and the rigorous application of Design Control.   


  • To provide support to and deputise for the R&D (Senior) Managers in regard to product investigations and other interdepartmental matters.
  • To drive and support innovations programmes interacting with Innovations Department.
  • Provide supervisory support and mentoring for a small project team.
  • To manage multiple internal stakeholders throughout the product development process, from tissue culture production to manufacturing, to quality control and quality assurance for the benefit of the project. 

Job Requirements


Required Skills/Experience: 

  • Core expertise in DNA/RNA-based diagnostics, in-situ hybridization (FISH/CISH).
  • Significant experience molecular biology: cloning, PCR, purification and characterization of nucleic acids, working databases and sequence analysis. Probes and primers design.
  • Proven experience of working in a scientific area, ideally with exposure to Design Control.
  • Experience of working within a regulated environment, ideally ISO13485.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • IHC and other immunological methods (Western Blotting, immunofluorescence)
  • Gene expression analysis, qPCR.
  • Southern and Northern Blotting.
  • Conjugation and labelling of proteins and/or nucleic acids.
  • NGS library preparation and bioinformatics data analysis.
  • Basic organic synthesis.


  • Ability to manage complex technical projects and undertake research with minimal supervision. This includes planning, executing and analyzing experiments.
  • Ability to write reports and supporting documentation to a high standard.
  • Strong motivator of teams and results oriented.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal/written).

Education and work experience List of Education, Certifications, Training:

  • PhD degree within a relevant Biomedical/Biological science.
  • Relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience is preferrable.

Travel % of Travel, include approximate overnight stays per week:

  • Travel expectations within this role are minimal (<10%)
