Description

Position Overview
The Senior Mechanical Engineer for Value Engineering will lead and support Value Engineering activities and objectives for the Indianapolis site of Beckman Coulter’s Life Science division.  The activities and objectives will include Cost Reduction, Inventory Reduction and On Time Delivery resolution by means of redesign.  The Value Engineering team has an annual objective of approximately $500K-$700K of cost savings.

Essential Functions
  • Provide value engineering support for Beckman Coulter Life Science products produced at the Indianapolis Site (Centrifuge, Liquid Handling Automation and Particle Characterization)
  • Responsible for the completion of mechanical design projects from concept, design, prototype, change plan, verification & validation and release to production.  Projects will primarily focus on cost improvements.
  • Responsible for leading and supporting design change team activities in order to document and implement design changes in compliance with design control procedures.
  • Develops and executes component and/or system tests to verify performance of mechanical components/systems to documented design requirements.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating product related documentation (both drawings and ERP system information) thru design and documentation control procedures (Design Change Plans, Verification Reports, Documentation Change Control (COR's), etc.)

Qualifications

Technical Requirements
  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years experience in product development and product engineering support role or Masters Degree with 3+ years experience.
  • Experience with instrumentation (equipment) design and integration including complex electro-mechanical systems, fluid handling, pneumatics, thermal systems, and/or optical systems preferred.
  • Technical expertise in Sheet Metal, Stamped Metals, Machining, Die Casting and Extrusions.  Experience with Plastics (Injection Molding, Blow Molding, Machining) is a plus.
  • Proficiency in using SolidWorks (Surface Modeling, Motion, and Simulation), Performing Tolerance Analysis, and GD&T
  • Demonstrated capability to troubleshoot and improve mechanical and electromechanical systems using formal problem solving methodology with analytical and statistical methods.
  • Experience in dealing with design changes in a structured design control/change environment for medical devices.
  • Excellent technical writing and PC skills required (MS Office) with attention to detail.
  • Self-Starter with a demonstrated ability to focus efforts, overcome obstacles and compete key objectives
  • Able to work well in a matrix organization and demonstrate strong communication and diplomacy competencies.
