The R&D Manager is the leader of a team of creative brains behind our bioreactors and mixers, being the driver of our innovation engine and the architect of our next generation of disposable devices and control systems, working on new product development projects from design concept until delivery to the market. 

Key responsibilities: 
You will be responsible for new product development and improvement projects on our disposables bioreactors and mixers and their related control systems. Your team works on projects from early phase (VOC and definition of specs) through design into testing, validation and product launch on the market. You then work with your colleagues from all other departments to ensure product is launched on time and according to customer expectations.

Team lead:
  • You boost your team and act as a real leader and coach;
  • You follow-up, check, challenge but also support your team members;
  • You have ownership of people development, review and goal setting;
  • You have engagement ownership of your team supported by HR team and tools;
  • You are a strong promotor of DBS tools and ongoing drive for improvement on day to day team performance;
  • You lead both the projects managers and the engineering resources allocated to the projects;
  • You are responsible for both department and projects capital and expense spend;
  • You are responsible for resource allocation to different ongoing projects and activities within a challenging environment;
  • You work in close collaboration with many departments (QA, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Marketing…) and you ensure the collaboration with your team is smooth and efficient;
  • You are owner of the spirit of innovation and risk-taking of your team and of the R&D department.
  • You are a solution provider in crisis situation;
  • You are responsible for the continuous improvement mindset of your team.
  • You have good technical understanding of the job done by your team members in their area of expertise (mechanical, chemical, electrical, automation…).
Responsible from A to Z for new product development projects:
  • You are responsible for operation and management of projects related to the design, development, manufacture, validation, documentation, sale, application and maintenance of Pall Biotech Products, in accordance with current QMS;
  • You ensure projects are carried out and products are produced in accordance with good manufacturing practice, safety guidelines and current legislation, and meet customer and market requirements;
  • You maintain project plans and records and report progress on the projects undertaken;
  • You are responsible for the project execution according to planning and the related preventive and corrective actions;
  • You are responsible for the technical decisions of your team which you support, guide, challenge and coach;
  • You ensure the product developed is fit for purpose and of good quality, validated and capable of manufacture;
  • You strive for the progress of the projects while taking into account other priorities of the company/department;
  • You evaluate risks (planning, safety and technical) linked to projects and products and take decision and counter measures;
  • You ensure best engineering practices are tightly followed;
  • You are responsible for DFQ (Design For Quality) and DFM (Design For Manufacturing) of the products developed by your team;
  • You prepare and present projects’ progress to the senior management;
  • You listen, understand, translate and document internal and external customers’ requirements;
  • You evaluate and follow-up workload of your team members;
  • You follow-up, check, challenge but also support project key suppliers’ progress;
  • You work in close collaboration with many departments and other project teams;
  • You ensure both products and projects documentation are properly prepared and kept up-to-date;
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Job Requirements


Experience & education:
  • Master degree in Engineering;
  • Minimum 5-10 years of relevant professional experience;
  • Experience with new product development project management;
  • Very good reporting skills (written and spoken), adjusted to your audience;
  • Experience with project management tools is a must;
  • Understanding of the biotech industry processes and standards;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (company language), French and Dutch are assets;
  • Good mix of technical understanding is a must (mechanical, chemical, electrical; automation…);
  • Knowledge of process, equipment and component validation;
  • Use of 6-sigma tools is a plus;
  • Knowledge of polymers is an asset (properties, types, treatment methods, forming processes…);
  • Knowledge of machine design is an asset (steel and stainless steel forming, assembly and finishing, painting, gaskets, mechanical assemblies, actuators, sensors…); 
  • Knowledge of CE regulatory (machinery directive, LV, EMC) is a plus.
