Direct reporting to the Concord site leader with dotted line reporting to the SCIEX Global Facility & EHS Director. The EH&S Specialist will develop, implement, maintain and review the company’s Environmental, Health & Safety programs at the Concord site including over 25 R&D, Chemical, Electrical and Client demonstration labs. The incumbent will ensure compliance with legislative, industry and corporate requirements and advise in relation to all EH&S matters for the site.  
Additionally, this position supports SCIEX global EH&S programs and auditing functions at other SCIEX and/or Danaher sites.   
Site duties (80%)
  • Monitor federal & local regulations and ensure site EHS programs are developed and permits obtained to ensure regulatory compliance with the requirements of current and emerging regulations, such as:
  • Maintain Permits – C of A for exhaust hoods and emergency back-up generator
  • Maintain Waste Water Program & Sewer Usage Discharge Agreement for the Rods Room  
  • Engaged in site MOC (Management of Change) with function peers and lead JSA (Job Safety Assessment) to manage EHS risks identified, such as:
  • Participate on the Moves, Adds, Changes Committee (MAC) to proactively ensure EH&S compliance with any upcoming changes.  
  • Administer the Laboratory Safety Programs 
  • Develop and annually review EHS Procedures and Work Instructions in compliance with regulatory requirements and best practices
  • Coordinate chemical, biosafety, hazardous waste and recycling programs:
  • Review & evaluate chemical purchases for the site to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Chemical handling, transportation & storage
  • Classify hazardous waste and maintain HWIN administration 
  • Biosafety compliance
  • Facility EHS Program governance:
  • Conduct New Hire Safety Orientation 
  • Coordinate and maintain training and records for programs including but not limited to First Aid, Oxygen Therapy, Chemical Spills, Fire Extinguishers, Hoist Training, Hot Work, LOTO, Roof Access, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Waste, Confined Space, Ergonomics, Medical Surveillance, Ladder Safety, Accident Investigation, Personal Protective Equipment; 
  • Lead the bi-monthly JHSC including meeting administration, Workplace Inspection Schedule, action item
  • tracking and closure; and communications; 
  • Conduct quarterly Site Walkabout with Senior Management;
  • Submit monthly EHS metrics reporting;
  • Administer site fire safety and emergency response plans, including fire warden training, first aid response team and emergency evacuation drills.   
  • Inspect and maintain adequate first aid supplies, AED’s, spill kits and specialized emergency response equipment
  • Develop, implement, and monitor for adherence to Electrical Safety & LOTO (Lock-out & Tag-out) programs within an  R&D environment
  • Conduct Incident/Accident investigations and Root cause analysis  
  • Develop, implement and monitor a Contractor Safety program onsite
  • Support internal and corporate EHS, Quality and FM Global auditing programs at this site
  • Coordinate ergonomic assessments with an external service provider
  • Support HR on WSIB claims management and Return to Work programs. 
  • Participate in business interruption & continuity management planning (BCP) and response
  • Interface with external regulatory and municipal agencies and host EHS related Gov. inspections as the primary contact.
  • Global Auditing & Global initiatives (20%)  
  • Support Global EH&S auditing programs at other SCIEX and/or Danaher sites including pre-audit, audit and post audit activities.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science or Engineering is required.
  • Must possess or be working towards obtaining a CHSC or CRSP designation 
  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience in progressively responsible EHS roles within medical or life sciences industry and lab/R&D operations;
  • Previous experience in carrying out Hazard Analysis, incident investigation and Risk Assessment 
  • Demonstrated ability to determine training needs, organize and conduct training
  • Requires Lead auditor certification or presently capable of being certified
  • Previous experience in dealing with regulatory agencies. 
  • Knowledgeable of policies and procedures associated with compliance with local safety and environmental regulations, and OSHA laws and regulations. 
  • Lean Manufacturing experience beneficial
  • This position requires up to 10% travel. 
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and changing environment

  • Ability to influence others without authority 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with various computer software applications, including (but not limited to) standard Microsoft Office applications, spreadsheets, slide presentations, databases, etc.  
  • Strong organizational skills and adherence to informational systems and processes 
  • Flexibility with work schedule to accommodate conference calls and webinars with overseas locations during non-standard EST time zone working hours
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills 
  • Must hold a valid passport and be able to travel internationally
